Run by The Scrap Exchange Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Durham, North Carolina, this space combines a reuse store and thrift shop with a gallery, an artist market, a design studio and room for community events. Children have their own Make N' Take Room, and the calendar also holds workshops, field trips and birthday parties. Shopping runs six days a week, Sundays included.
Material donations are dropped off at Scrap Thrift, and gifts to the organization are tax deductible as allowed by law. A hand-painted sign on a white pillar greets visitors, and rusted metal sculptures stand in the garden out front. Since 1991, this creative reuse center has worked to promote creativity, environmental awareness and community through reuse.
