All donations for The Scrap Exchange come in through Scrap Thrift in Durham, North Carolina. The Scrap Exchange is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit creative reuse center, and since 1991 its mission has been to promote creativity, environmental awareness and community through reuse. Besides the thrift store, the organization runs a sustainable arts center, a gallery, a community space, an artist market and a design studio.
Donations to the nonprofit are tax deductible as the law allows. Drop-offs are taken Tuesday through Saturday, and on Sundays by appointment for members of its Friends of Mongo supporter program. The shop itself is open six days a week, Sundays included. Out front, bright green and blue columns hold up the arches, and the sign above shows the store's name on a green clothes hanger.
