In Mount Airy, the Goodwill Store and Donation Center sells donated goods and takes in new ones. Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina, a nonprofit, runs the store, and its sales pay for free job training and career services. The doors open seven days a week and stay open into the evening. The red brick building has the Goodwill name across it in glowing blue letters.
Donations are tax-deductible. The most needed items include clothing, shoes, furniture, books, housewares, linens, jewelry and flat screen televisions, and furniture donations go to retail stores like this one whenever possible. Large appliances, mattresses, building materials, paint, CRT televisions and recalled children's gear are turned away. Computers of any brand and in any condition are accepted for recycling through the Dell Reconnect program.
