In Lake Ronkonkoma, Options Thrift Shop has operated since 1991, when Options for Community Living opened it as pre-vocational training for participants in its Mental Health Residential Programs. Volunteers from those programs learn basic retail and customer service skills under the guidance of a staff member, and the shop is open five days a week. It occupies a sage-green shingled house with dark shutters and a white sign on maroon posts out front.
Donations are taken on Thursdays and Saturdays only, packed in bags or boxes under 25 pounds. Accepted goods include clothing and shoes for all ages, accessories, cookware, housewares and lamps, small appliances, laptops, musical instruments, bedding, bicycles, craft supplies and toys. Furniture, mattresses and gas-powered equipment are turned away. Items the shop cannot sell go to partner charities and salvage companies.
