Martha's Place Thrift Shop in Lake Grove, New York, was started by a local church to give its congregation and the surrounding community very low-cost clothing and household goods. The racks and shelves carry new and used clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry, bedding, linens and kitchenware. Volunteers run it, and some of them aren't church members.
Donated items in good to excellent condition are sorted, priced and displayed by the volunteer staff. Money from sales goes back to the church and its missions. The shop serves about 2,500 customers a year and is open four days a week, including Mondays. Out front hangs a white sign with the name in black script above bold red lettering. People referred by the pastor or others because of need can get items at no cost.
