Work experience for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities is the reason the Arc Thrift Store & Donation Center in Chico, California, was founded. The Arc of Butte County, a nonprofit, runs the store and uses its proceeds to fund Arc programs, while client employees build job skills on the sales floor. Shoppers 55 and older get a storewide discount every Wednesday, and the doors are open seven days a week, into the evening on some days.
Donations come in every morning and include clothing, shoes, jewelry, housewares, furniture, books, records, toys, working small appliances, antiques, hand tools and office supplies. Pickups can be scheduled for large items, and the store also takes cars, boats, RVs and motorcycles. The pink stucco building has teal arched awnings under a blue-and-green sign.
