Fort Payne is home to Thrifty Outfitters, a community thrift store that supports the DeKalb County Children's Advocacy Center. Its sales help pay for the center's programs for abused and vulnerable children, including forensic interviews, therapy, family advocacy, parent education and supervised visitation. The center offers all of these free to families.
The shop is open five days a week and sells furniture, toys, artwork, jewelry, purses and shoes along with clothing for women, men and children. Donations are taken at the back door Tuesday through Friday. The store asks that nothing be left after hours, since items left outside can be lost or stolen. Inside, the sales floor has white metal walls, long tables covered in black cloth and a full wall of hanging purses.
