Proceeds from Saint Matthew Thrift Shop & Gift Shop fund the outreach ministries of Saint Matthew Catholic Church. Those ministries give food to the hungry, shelter to the homeless and clothing to people in need, and they help with bills such as utility payments. The parish counts the shop among its Matthew 25:35 ministries, named for the Gospel verse about feeding the hungry and welcoming the stranger.
Everything for sale comes in as a donation and is sorted and priced in-house before reaching the floor. Volunteers work alongside paid staff in the downtown Winter Haven store, which opens on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Long racks of jackets, sweaters and tops run down the center of the sales floor.
