Saint Matthew Thrift & Gift Shop in downtown Winter Haven is open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday. The shop is a ministry of Saint Matthew Catholic Church. Every item on its shelves has been donated, and sales fund the parish's Matthew 25:35 ministries. These ministries provide food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, clothing for those in need and help with utility payments.
Volunteers help run the shop, and the parish signs up new ones online. The sales floor has a black-and-white checkerboard floor, with framed artwork hung above long shelves of glassware, china and home decor. The shop draws its guiding spirit from a line by St. Vincent de Paul on serving the poor as masters and patrons.
