Run as a Pennsylvania nonprofit and a federally recognized 501(c)(3) charity, Philly AIDS Thrift sells goods donated by the public and gives the proceeds to local organizations fighting HIV/AIDS. Its stock ranges from the lovely and useful to the amusing and the occasionally mysterious. New donations arrive all day long. The organization also awards grants, promotes HIV testing and takes on new volunteers.
Donors can follow a printed donation guide that explains what to bring, and the shop sells gift cards too. Its tall building is painted in broad vertical stripes of teal, blue, orange and green, with a hanging sign that spells out the name in red initials. The doors open seven days a week, with evening hours every day.
