Sales at Guardian Angel Thrift pay for Alzheimer's research. The store is run by Guardian Angel Thrift Inc., a North Carolina nonprofit that sends 65% of its profits, after operating expenses, to research on the disease. So far it has given more than $3.5 million to that work across the state. The organization also creates jobs for older adults and for people who face barriers to traditional employment, and its stores rely on paid staff along with donors, shoppers and volunteers.
The Apex shop is the fourth and newest location in a network of four North Carolina stores. It is open five days a week, and donated items are taken in at the back of the building. Its white-painted brick front shows the store's name in bold white letters on a tan panel.
