Volunteers started the Hospice of Yuma Thrift Shop in 1991 to raise money for the care of terminally ill patients. It began in a storage room at the main Hospice of Yuma office and later moved into its own space, with an extra room for showing donated furniture. All net proceeds go to the charitable care program of Hospice of Yuma, a nonprofit hospice provider.
The shop resells clothing, furniture and other used items donated by the community. Furniture pickups can be scheduled, but goods in poor condition, building supplies and automotive parts are not accepted. Volunteers help run the store, which is open five days a week. A separate furniture showroom with a hummingbird sign sits beside the main shop, and pieces of furniture are often set out along the sidewalk.
