Canton is home to the newest location of the Community Thrift Store run by Haywood Christian Ministry, a nonprofit working toward healthy, stable, hunger-free communities. All sales support the ministry's wider work, including its food pantry, food lockers and the Somers Resource Center. The shelves hold clothes, appliances, books, blankets and other everyday goods.
Every donation is sorted before it reaches the floor. Torn or stained clothing goes to recycling, broken electronics are scrapped and books with missing pages stay off the shelves. Neighbors who can't afford clothing can get a voucher through the resource center or a referral from a partner agency, and they shop like everyone else, paying with a coupon. The store is open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, in a red brick storefront with dark green trim.
