Open five days a week in Calumet, Michigan, the Copper Country Habitat for Humanity ReStore helps fund the local Habitat affiliate, along with community donations, grants, business partnerships and volunteer labor. The affiliate partners with families who put in sweat equity, complete homeownership education and buy their homes with affordable mortgages. It also repairs existing homes and builds accessibility ramps for people in need.
The sales floor is filled with secondhand furniture, including upholstered armchairs, wooden desks and dining sets, plus long rows of shelving stacked with dishes, glassware and kitchenware under tall arched stained-glass windows. Habitat for Humanity was founded on Christian principles. The local affiliate welcomes and serves people of all backgrounds, and no one has to share its faith to apply, volunteer or support its work.
