A nonprofit resale shop in La Grange, Second Chance Emporium is run by a coalition of local churches from several denominations. Unpaid volunteers from those congregations and the wider community do most of the work. Profits go back out as scholarships and as grants to local 501(c)(3) charities, which apply for funding and are chosen by the store's board of directors. The shop opens Fridays and Saturdays in a 20,000-square-foot building with a gray metal front and a peaked entry canopy, where black letters spell out its name.
The store sells new and used clothing, shoes, furniture, books, dishes, jewelry, toys, bedding, small appliances, antiques and collectibles. Donations from the public are tax deductible and must be clean and in working order. Televisions, computers, monitors and car seats are not accepted.
