Sales at this Hempstead thrift shop fund the work of House of Help, a nonprofit run entirely by volunteers with no paid staff. It opened in November 2012 as a community food pantry in partnership with the Houston Food Bank. Proceeds from the shop and cash donations pay for help with gas for work, utilities and rent. A medical grant program covers medications, doctor visits, glasses, dental care and travel to out-of-town doctors and hospitals.
The pantry gives out food, hygiene items, baby and adult supplies, and food for special diets, and each Christmas the organization runs Toys for Tots for local families. It works with the school district, local churches, the probation department and other agencies. Inside, clothing and handbags hang on red grid panels over blue carpet, next to metal shelves of housewares. The shop is open five days a week.
