Grace Episcopal Church runs the Silk Purse as a nonprofit ministry, and it has served Galveston since 1959. The shop carries clothing for men, women and children in every size from newborn to extra-large, along with small furnishings, household and kitchen equipment, linens, sporting goods, toys, collectibles, books, costumes and decorative items. Long rails of hanging clothes, sorted by type, run the length of the sales floor.
Donations can be dropped off any time the store is open, which is Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays. The store also takes volunteers as part of the church's outreach to the wider Galveston community, and helpers do not need to belong to Grace Church. Markdowns come with seasonal sales, such as a fall sale with a discount rack.
