In Bradenton, Florida, HOPE Chest is the thrift store of HOPE Family Services, a private not-for-profit corporation founded in 1979. The organization works with survivors of domestic violence, helping them stay safe, gain strength and evaluate their options, and its services are confidential and offered at no charge.
HOPE also works toward social change, aiming to give people the skills and information to solve problems without violence. Its advocacy is survivor-focused and treats each person as the expert in his or her own life. The shop is open six days a week and closes on Sundays. Racks of clothing fill its front windows, next to a purple brick wall that carries the store's sign.
