In Yuma, Hands Extended Thrift Store has been open since August 2015. It is run by Hands Extended, a Christian nonprofit that started with a tuition program for families in San Luis. The shop has no paid staff and relies on nearly 50 volunteers. It is open five days a week and runs a weekly special.
Sales help veterans, homeless residents and families in need across the Yuma and Foothills area. Every month the store gives 5% of its gross sales to the King's Kids before- and after-school program. It also sends clothing, food, diapers and mobility equipment to groups such as Right Turn For Vets, Jessie's Closet and Yuma's Safe House. Because of restructuring, it no longer accepts donations. A tall yellow sign with red lettering stands beside the red-trimmed building.
