Saddles, tack and horse supplies share the floor with art, jewelry, apparel, housewares and furniture at The Horse Shelter Resale Store in Santa Fe. Sales support The Horse Shelter, a nonprofit that rescues abused, abandoned and neglected horses throughout New Mexico. The shop operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, does not collect sales tax and is open seven days a week.
Donors can ask for a tax donation receipt when they drop off items. The store does not take major appliances, mattresses, bedding, children's clothing or toys, personal hygiene items, or ripped, stained or torn clothing, and it accepts books only when they are about horses. The shop fills a tan metal building, and its red roll-up door stands open beneath a red-and-white banner, with hay bales set out front.
