Every sale at Sister Sallie's goes to SAFE Harbor, which provides shelter, advocacy and support to survivors of domestic violence. The store started after community members kept dropping off boxes of clothing, used furniture and old dishes at the SAFE Harbor office. Today it is building a permanent source of revenue to keep those services going. SAFE Harbor clients can use vouchers to get basic household supplies for a new home at no cost, and they can also gain job experience working at the store.
The shelves hold clothing, shoes, furniture, housewares, small appliances, books, toys, craft items and seasonal goods. A large volunteer team runs the store five days a week, and new volunteers are welcome. Out front hangs a long purple-and-white sign, and the entrance has a purple door.
