Glassware, appliances, furniture, toys, clothing, antiques and collectibles fill the shelves at Heart & Hand Thrift Store in Philippi, which opens on weekdays and closes on weekends. Every item for sale comes in as a donation, and the shop sits in a red brick building with a sign at the entrance asking that nothing be left outside.
The store is run by Heart and Hand House, a nonprofit mission project affiliated with the United Methodist Church that serves low-income people in crisis. The ministry also runs a food pantry, a home repair program, newborn layettes and a backpack feeding program for local schoolchildren. Proceeds from the thrift sales help fund its emergency assistance programs, which cover utilities, rent and certain medical expenses.
