Open six days a week and closed on Sundays, the De Pere Christian Outreach thrift store turns its sales into help for the community. Store proceeds and money donations pay for emergency rent, gas and utility assistance for residents of the 54115 ZIP code, and they also fund gifts to local charitable organizations. Items from the store go straight to families in need and to other nonprofits.
In 1990, eight De Pere churches started the outreach together, each giving seed money. The churches are Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Episcopal and Congregational, and the mission has paid its own way since then. A board member from each church and more than 350 volunteers run the work, which also includes a food pantry and a Christmas store. The building has a deep green gabled front with the store's name in white letters.
