Thrift Haven in Springfield gives all of its proceeds to Fair Haven Children's Home, a state-licensed residential care facility that has served children since 1964. The store carries appliances, books, clothing, electronics, furniture, housewares, shoes and toys. Most of its staff are unpaid volunteers who collect, sort, price and stock the donations. It is open six days a week and closed on Sundays.
Donations can be dropped off at the store, and for larger pieces such as furniture, a truck can sometimes come to pick them up. Clothes too worn to sell go in a separate bag marked "rags" and are shipped to a warehouse in Texas that prepares items for mission trips. Older televisions, computer monitors and stained or torn mattresses are not accepted. Dark green donation bins stand out front beneath a white sign with a green and gold logo.
