Sparrow's Nest in McHenry puts its net proceeds back into Home of the Sparrow, the nonprofit that runs it. That money pays for programs and services that help women and children move from homelessness to self-sufficiency. The store sells clothing, furniture and housewares, and except for mattresses and box springs, every item is new or used and donated by community members.
Donations are taken during store hours until late afternoon, and donors get a blank receipt for their tax records. The store also gives clothing, furniture and housewares free of charge to Home of the Sparrow clients and clients of partner agencies. It is open six days a week, closed Sundays, and has a text-message loyalty program that earns rewards toward purchases. Large white letters spell out its name across a brown metal-paneled front.
