Mountain Findings in Highlands, North Carolina, is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It is the community thrift store of a 100% volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has served the area since 1969. The store takes furniture, textiles, housewares, lighting and kitchenware. Donors can drop items off at the garage door behind the building or schedule a pick-up. It does not accept paint, TVs, mattresses, clothing, batteries, chemicals or other hazardous materials.
The stock runs from antiques to contemporary pieces, along with some truly odd finds. Money from sales goes back to the community as grants to local organizations. It also funds scholarships for Highlands High School graduates, including students going into trades, certification programs and two-year degrees. A green sign reading Furniture & Rug Warehouse hangs above the white-columned front porch of the blue-gray building.
