A thrift shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Helping Hands Mission Store opens its doors five days a week. Its tan brick front is trimmed with deep blue panels beneath the windows, where a red neon OPEN sign glows. Out on the sidewalk, a sandwich board repeats that word three times in bright pink, green and orange lettering. The shop also keeps a resident cat, and a hand-lettered orange note taped to the glass door asks visitors to watch for it.
