Surplus home improvement materials stay out of local landfills at the Harbor Habitat ReStore in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The store takes these materials as donations and sells them again. It is run by Harbor Habitat for Humanity, which has worked with families in the community for more than 25 years to build safe, affordable homes. The organization is also moving its main office into the ReStore building.
The store is open five days a week. Its sales floor holds rows of wooden dining tables and chairs, with chandeliers and other light fixtures hanging overhead. Beyond donated goods, Harbor Habitat welcomes volunteers to help with its homebuilding work and runs a program for families who want to apply for a home.
