Volunteers run the Discovery Shoppe in downtown Chico, and it has stayed open without a break since 1959, when a group of community women started it to raise money for local charities. All of its proceeds go back into the community. The shop has given more than $1.25 million in charitable awards, including recent gifts to Habitat for Humanity, a fentanyl-detection dog for the sheriff's canine unit and the Butte College Roadrunner Hub's basic needs center.
Shop volunteers wear red aprons, and the white brick building has a matching red door between red shutters under a maroon sign. Both purchases and donated goods help pay for the shop's giving. It is open four days a week, Wednesday through Saturday, with shorter hours on Saturday.
