Since 1949, the Episcopal Church of St. Matthew in San Mateo has run a thrift shop in its church basement, reselling donated goods as part of its outreach ministry. Volunteers from the parish and the wider community staff the shop. Its proceeds are the main source of income for the League for Service, which gives the funds to local, regional and national charities, including Mission Hospice, LifeMoves and Episcopal Relief.
The shop sells donated clothing, jewelry, small furniture, household goods and children's toys, and shoppers can have coffee and a cookie while they browse. It opens on Saturdays from August through May and closes for the season with a final sale, staying shut through June and July. Donations are accepted only while the shop is open.
