Mineola, Texas, is home to this thrift store run by Animal Preservation of East Texas, known as APET. Its sales help fund the group's shelter for stray dogs and cats, where every animal is spayed or neutered before adoption. The organization works to reduce the number of unwanted pets and to cut down on cruelty, neglect and abandonment.
APET also promotes SNAP, a low-cost spay and neuter assistance program, and runs outreach and education programs that teach responsible pet ownership. Its longer-term goal is to grow its SPCA-style shelter so it can take in more homeless dogs and cats. The shop is open four days a week, Wednesday through Saturday. The red building has a wide canopy over the front, and the words "Giving Animals a New Leash on Life" are painted on its gable.
