Novels, cookbooks, children's books, coloring books and textbooks make up the book sale at The Chaparral Center in Alto, Texas, where hundreds of titles are on offer. The center is open four days a week. Its long brown-sided front sits under a metal awning held up by whitewashed brick pillars.
Beyond books, the center runs the Alto Food Pantry, which holds a distribution day once a month, and hosts a Women, Infants and Children clinic twice a month. Each summer its Summer Food Program serves free lunches to children and to adults with special needs, with no registration required. The center also organizes an Angel Tree program and accepts both donations and volunteers to support its work.
