In Brookfield, Connecticut, Savers sells secondhand clothing for the whole family along with dinnerware, accessories, books, housewares and electronics. It is a for-profit business, so money spent in the store does not go to any charity. Donations dropped off at its donation center are different: the store pays Hartsprings Foundation, Inc. for them, and the foundation supports Big Brothers Big Sisters. Accepted items include clothing and shoes, bed and bath goods, games and toys, sporting goods, small appliances and small furniture.
The dark green metal-sided building has red lettering and a tall gabled cupola rising above the entrance. People who donate get a coupon toward a later purchase. Tuesdays bring a discount for shoppers 55 and older, and Super Savers Club members get members-only sales. The store is open seven days a week and stays open into the evening.
