A nonprofit thrift store and boutique in Oviedo, The HOPE Chest is run by HOPE Helps, Inc., and all of its proceeds fund the programs of HOPE's Resource Center, which works to prevent hunger and homelessness in Central Florida. Its stock comes from community donations of clothing, housewares, electronics, jewelry and more. Families referred by partner agencies and faith-based groups get vouchers for necessities such as clothing, shoes and appliances.
The store is open six days a week and closed on Sundays. Donors drop items off at a gate door, where staff or volunteers help unload. Pickups for furniture and appliances are scheduled within a 10-mile radius, and appliances are tested first. Mattresses, bed frames and entertainment centers are not accepted. The shop sits in a blue-and-gray building under large oaks hung with Spanish moss.
