Since 1973, the Thrift Shop in Aurora, Nebraska, has been the main fundraising engine for Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a volunteer organization formed in 1963. Sales here fund improvements at Memorial Community Health, helping raise the quality of care and keeping the cost of equipment and services from being passed on to patients. The Auxiliary has raised and donated more than $2 million.
The shop sells clothing and home goods and opens on Thursdays and Fridays. A blue triangular sign set into the peak of its tan-sided gable marks the entrance. Beyond running the store, Auxiliary members help set up the health system's annual gala and assist with other projects, and membership is open to anyone interested in volunteering, with no dues or fees.
