Housewares, lawn and garden items, baby furniture, children's toys, small appliances, and pet toys and accessories fill the shelves at Pick of the Litter Thrift Shop in Oakland, Maryland, along with other goods for the home. The shop opened in April 2013 and is open four days a week, Sundays included. Volunteers help run the store and get the first pick of newly arrived merchandise.
A white sign with a maroon dog and a tan cat hangs on the shop's green-sided building, which has a stone base and red posts. HART for Animals runs the shop as part of its fundraising model, and every sale goes toward the group's animal adoption center and its other programs.
