A nonprofit thrift shop with a job-training mission, A Hand Up in Rock Hill is run by A Hand Up Ministries, a faith-based 501(c)(3) that also operates a farm ministry. The store carries clothing, furniture and more, and its work provides paid, résumé-building shifts on the sales floor. Support for the ministry also goes toward growing and sharing fresh food at Fresh Start Farm.
Neighbors can donate goods, give money or volunteer their time. Through a program called Cam's Cabinet, people can choose everyday essentials for themselves. The ministry builds its work on four values it calls C.A.R.E.: collaboration, awareness, responsibility and excellence. Rolling racks of children's clothing stand out front under a black awning, and the store is open six days a week and closed on Sundays.
