Run by ENGAGE NC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, HandmeUPs Thrift in Raleigh was set up for one purpose: to give people with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities paid work and volunteer roles. The store is now accepting applications for volunteer positions, and anyone interested can come in during open hours and ask for a manager.
Its name runs across the tan front of the building in green capital letters, above a row of white columns on brick bases. Its doors are open seven days a week, though Sunday hours start later in the day. Donations are taken at the store Monday through Saturday, up to an hour before closing.
