Step Thrift Store trains retail interns with disabilities on the job. Its sales and donations pay for that training and for other programs run by Services To Enhance Potential (STEP), the nonprofit that owns and operates the store. The Dearborn shop opened in 2016, nine years after STEP opened its first thrift store. Potted plants line the curb under its red-trimmed, brick-columned front.
The store takes clothing, linens, shoes, jewelry, housewares, small appliances, toys, bikes, records, DVDs, vintage pieces and home decor during its donation hours. Staff must approve furniture, and drop-offs are set up ahead of time. It does not take mattresses, cribs, car seats, major appliances or exercise equipment. Pickups can be scheduled for ten or more bags or boxes. The doors are open seven days a week and stay open into the evening.
