Overflow Thrift Store in Ames turns what the community gives away into support for people in need. Since 2014, its sales have sent more than $1.5 million to over 25 organizations working in Iowa and around the world. Those groups include a maternity home, a men's recovery house and a university scholarship program in Haiti. Volunteers, both individuals and groups, help run it.
The white brick building has a bright blue metal roof, and window signs point shoppers one way and donors the other. Furniture is a specialty, with free delivery on qualifying purchases. Some items are also sold online through eBay, for pickup or shipping. Donations are taken during store hours, and the store stays open into the evening late in the week. It's closed on Sundays.
