Owned by Hope Services, a nonprofit, HopeTHRIFT puts every purchase toward programs for people with developmental disabilities, such as autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, and for people with mental health needs. Hope Services has done this work since 1954. The San Jose store sells clothing, housewares, toys and bikes, and new items arrive every day.
The store's name runs across a tan front in white letters next to a cluster of green, blue, orange and red arrows. Donations come in through drop-off sites, and donors can get a receipt for what they give. The store is open six days a week, Sundays included. Members of the HopeREWARDS program earn points toward discounts and get double points every Wednesday.
