In Kennewick, Washington, Safe Harbor Support Center runs Sails Outlet, an upscale secondhand store that sells new and used merchandise and is open seven days a week. About 30 volunteers staff the shop, covering everything from cashiering and sales to housekeeping, marketing and donation coordination. Long racks of clothing fill the sales floor, and a hand-lettered Boutique sign hangs near the back wall.
Donations are accepted during store hours. Because space is limited, large furniture and appliances need an appointment, and used mattresses and car seats can't be taken for safety reasons. The store was set up to cover Safe Harbor Support Center's operating expenses, and all of its profits go directly to the organization's programs.
