Diverting donated materials from the waste stream to sell as low-cost creative supplies is the work of Scrap It Up, a nonprofit creative reuse center in Cincinnati that opened in 2017. Volunteers run it under the umbrella of the Kennedy Heights Arts Center, and money left over after operating costs goes to local arts and green initiatives. The stock changes constantly and includes yarn, fabric, fine arts materials, paper, frames, scrapbooking and jewelry-making supplies, rubber stamps, wood scraps, patterns and stencils.
Every item comes from community donations, and donations are accepted by appointment only. The store is open four days a week and stays open into the evening on Wednesdays. Brightly painted bands under its front windows read "rethink, repurpose" and "recycle, restore, recreate, art."
