In St. Petersburg, the St. Vincent de Paul CARES Community Thrift Store is run by the nonprofit now called Vincentian CARES. Close to 90 percent of every dollar spent here goes to housing programs that help individuals, families and veterans move out of homelessness. The store sells household goods, clothing and furniture. Through a voucher system run with the SVdP Conferences of South Pinellas, it also gives those same goods free to people in need. Items that don't sell are recycled.
Donations can be dropped off at the store, or a pickup can be scheduled. Drop-off closes an hour before the store does. Volunteers work shifts of at least two hours alongside the full-time staff, and the store also takes court-ordered community service. A blue-paneled facade carries a white sign with the store's name in bold blue letters. The store is open six days a week and closed Sundays.
