Hope Nuevo Thrift in San Jose is open six days a week, Sundays included, and stays open into the evening on at least one day. It runs as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that pairs its shop with a community care center. Clothing racks line the sidewalk out front beneath a bright orange-and-green sign.
The store space, the staff and the whole operation go toward caring for at-risk and homeless neighbors and low-income families through long-term relationships. Its work includes free clothing and essentials for homeless families and individuals, job training for at-risk youth and disabled young adults, and weekend community events focused on the homeless crisis. A homeless community store brings free essentials to encampments, and the organization also supplies clients of partners such as City Team and the Bay Area Community Health Mobile Team.
