In El Paso, the Assistance League Thrift Shop helps fund Assistance League of El Paso, the 50th chapter of the national Assistance League. The chapter is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has served the city since 1971, and the shop shares a building with its chapter house. Together with grants, fundraising and donations from the public, sales at the shop pay for the chapter's six philanthropic programs.
One of those programs, Operation School Bell, gives new clothing to local students in need. Another provides Assault Survivor Kits with clothing and toiletry items. PASO Bears comfort children in traumatic situations, and Stitches of Love gives handmade quilts and knit blankets to local agencies. The six programs serve more than 4,000 people each year, and the shop is open four days a week.
